In honor of International Day of Transgender Visibility (March 31), CeCe McDonald will give a presentation at the Rutgers-Camden campus titled On Racism, Mass Incarceration, & Trans Liberation. CeCe was a political prisoner incarcerated for defending herself against a racist, transphobic assault in July, 2010. Supporters and activists in her home state of Minneapolis, as well as others across the U.S., created a solidarity campaign to demand her freedom and were able to win her a reduced sentence. After serving a 17-month term, she was released in January 2014. CeCe has since become a leading activist for LGBTQ liberation, prison abolition, and racial justice. She is currently working on a forthcoming documentary with actress Laverne Cox titled, Free CeCe.
