As members of the faculty of Rutgers University in Camden, we would like to express our sadness over the death in September of Tyler Clementi, a student at the campus in New Brunswick. In light of the bullying, antipathy, and general lack of tolerance that individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LBGTQ) often face, we would like to remind our students that we care deeply about their well-being and that they have our support.
As part of this support, we uphold the Rutgers University Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and Harassment. Among the protected categories in the Policy are sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression. Indeed, we want ALL of our students to feel safe inside and outside our classrooms, not only tolerated but celebrated for who they are.
